When a Fire TV Stick can’t connect to the internet, it’s usually because of a problem with the local network or with the internet itself. The wireless network signal might not be strong enough, there might be a problem with the local network hardware, or your internet connection might not be working.
If you set up your own Fire Stick, you should be able to fix this problem by using our troubleshooting tips. If someone else set up your Fire Stick for you, especially if they installed a VPN, you may need to ask them for help.
Why Won’t My Firestick Connect To The Internet?
Most of the time, a problem with your home network is why your Fire Stick can’t connect to the internet. However, there are a few other things you’ll need to rule out. Most of the time, a Fire Stick can’t connect to the internet because of the following:
Wi-Fi signal strength: The wireless signal may be too weak if your Fire Stick is too far from your wireless router or if there are too many things in the way. This might be fixed by moving your router or Fire Stick.
Problems with network hardware: The Fire Stick might not be able to connect to the internet because your router or modem is broken. Most of the time, this problem can be fixed by restarting your hardware.
VPN configuration: If you have a VPN installed on your Fire Stick and it’s not set up right or isn’t working, the VPN can stop the Fire Stick from connecting to the internet. To fix this kind of problem, either change the way the VPN is set up or uninstall it.
Internet outage: If your internet is down or you’re having other problems, the Fire Stick might not be able to connect to Amazon’s servers.
Amazon service outage: If Amazon is having trouble with its services, your Fire Stick might not work.
How to Fix a Firestick That Can’t Connect To the Internet
Check to see if Amazon is down before you do anything else. If Amazon services are down, you can’t do anything but wait until they fix the problem. If everything seems to be working on their end and you can access things like Amazon Prime from other devices on your network, you can move on to other possible problems.
Follow these troubleshooting tips to connect your Fire Stick to the internet:
Check the Wi-Fi connection on your Fire Stick. Go to Settings > Network and then choose your network to check your connection. If the signal strength isn’t good or very good, try moving your wireless router or Fire Stick to improve the connection.
Reset your connection to the network. If it says that your Wi-Fi signal strength is strong or very strong, but you still can’t connect to the internet, try resetting the connection. To forget the network, go to Settings > Network > Your Wi-Fi Network and then press the menu button. Then, you can choose your network again to reconnect, enter your password, and check to see if the connection is working.
If you can, try your 2.4 GHz network. If your modem has both a 2.4 GHz network and a 5 GHz network, go to Settings > Network, switch to the 2.4 GHz network, and see if the Fire Stick can connect. The 5 GHz network is faster, but the 2.4 GHz network will have a stronger signal and a longer range.
Try using an Ethernet cable. If you can’t get a strong Wi-Fi connection, you can use an Ethernet adapter to connect a Fire Stick to your router. It’s a piece of hardware that plugs into the Fire Stick’s USB port and lets you connect both power and an Ethernet cable.
Restart the hardware in your network. Restarting your network hardware, like your router and modem, can fix a lot of problems with how well your network works. Unplug them both, wait 30 to 60 seconds, and then plug them back in.
Turn on your Fire Stick again. If the Fire Stick itself is broken, most of the time you can fix it by restarting it. Your Fire Stick doesn’t have a power button, but you can turn it back on by unplugging it for five seconds and then plugging it back in.
Check how your VPN is set up. If you have a VPN installed on your Fire Stick, it could be stopping it from connecting to the internet. You can quickly find out if this isn’t the case by temporarily removing the VPN and seeing if you can still connect to the internet. If that solves the problem, talk to the people who made your VPN app to find out how to set it up.
Don’t use your Amazon account anymore. If you get an error saying that home is currently unavailable or that the Fire Stick can’t connect to the server, deregistering your Amazon account may help. Go to Settings > My Account > Amazon account > Deregister, and then follow the instructions on the screen. Then, you’ll have to sign back into your Amazon account and see if the Fire Stick works.
Reset your Fire Stick to factory settings. Do a factory reset on your Fire Stick if you still can’t connect it to the internet. It will reset the Fire Stick to the way it was when you first got it, so you’ll have to set it up again.
