Your smart home is going to get much better, a consortium of organizations working on a single platform for smart home systems according to the latest release from the ZigBee Alliance.
The alliance, which includes Apple, Google and Amazon, said in a recent update that it is on target for a 2021 launch, and will produce a formal specification “by the end of 2020.”
The group described the aims of ‘Project Wired Home over IP’ in the announcement, saying that it aimed to ‘pull off our pledge to unify a fragmented market under a common networking framework that will help businesses concentrate on building interactions over ‘plumbing’.”
A release date of 2021 means our smart home devices will become service-agnostic even earlier than we expected – particularly given the difficulties encountered by many tech firms as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The ZigBee Partnership currently includes “145 successful firms” including many of the smart home world’s major players including Philips Hue and Samsung SmartThings.

Its goal is to create a consistent networking model for smart home systems that vendors can use to enhance user experience, making it easy to set up a smart home system – whichever product you choose.
