How many smoke and CO alarms do I need?

    The mounting rules that actually matter

    Height and position

    Smoke rises, so alarms belong high. Ceiling mounting is best, kept at least 4 inches away from where the ceiling meets the wall — that corner is a dead-air space where smoke circulates poorly. If you must wall-mount, place the alarm 4 to 12 inches below the ceiling.

    On a vaulted or peaked ceiling, mount within 3 feet of the peak measured horizontally, but not in the apex itself. The very top few inches is another dead-air pocket.

    Distances that prevent nuisance alarms

    Most alarms that get taped over or have their batteries pulled were mounted too close to something. The standard clearances:

    • At least 10 feet from cooking appliances. This is the single biggest cause of nuisance alarms. If your layout makes 10 feet impossible, use a photoelectric alarm rather than ionization, which is markedly less prone to false triggering from cooking.
    • At least 3 feet from HVAC supply vents and ceiling fans. Moving air pushes smoke away from the sensor and delays detection.
    • At least 3 feet from bathroom doors. Steam sets off alarms much like smoke does.
    • Avoid very cold or very hot spaces. Unconditioned attics and garages fall outside most alarms' rated temperature range, and condensation causes failures.

    Carbon monoxide is a different problem

    Carbon monoxide mixes fairly evenly with air rather than rising the way smoke does, so height is less critical — but the point of a CO alarm is to wake sleeping people, which is why placement outside bedrooms matters most.

    Keep CO alarms a reasonable distance from fuel-burning appliances themselves. Mounted directly beside a furnace or water heater, an alarm will pick up the brief, harmless CO spike during normal ignition and cry wolf.

    Interconnection

    Interconnected alarms all sound when any one detects something. In a multi-storey house this matters enormously: a fire starting in the basement should wake people upstairs, and a single standalone alarm two floors down often won't. Hardwired alarms are typically interconnected by a third wire; battery and smart alarms interconnect wirelessly.

    This is the clearest advantage of smart alarms — as well as sounding together, they send a phone notification, which is the only version of this that reaches you when nobody is home. If you're mixing brands, note that wireless interconnection generally only works within a single manufacturer's ecosystem.

    Replacement age

    Sensors degrade. Smoke alarms are replaced 10 years from the date of manufacture — not the date you installed them, which may be years later. Carbon monoxide alarms have shorter lives, commonly 7 to 10 years depending on the model. Both dates are printed on the back of the unit. An alarm past its date can pass its test-button check and still fail to detect a real fire, because the test button only verifies the sounder and battery, not the sensor.

    Common questions

    How many smoke detectors do I need in a 2-storey, 3-bedroom house?

    Typically six: one in each of the three bedrooms, one in the hallway outside them, one on the other floor, and one in the basement if there is one. The exact count depends on how the sleeping areas are grouped and whether there are additional levels such as a finished attic.

    Where should a carbon monoxide detector be placed?

    Outside each separate sleeping area, so it can wake people, and on every level of the home. If you have an attached garage, one on the level adjoining the garage is important, because running a car briefly with the door open is a common CO source. Keep them from being mounted right against a furnace or water heater to avoid nuisance alarms during normal ignition.

    Can I put a smoke alarm in the kitchen?

    Not within 10 feet of cooking appliances if you want it to stay on the ceiling. Kitchens generally are not required to have one, and mounting an alarm too close to a stove is the fastest route to a disabled alarm. If your kitchen opens onto a hallway that does need coverage, use a photoelectric alarm and place it as far from the cooking appliances as the layout allows.

    Do I need a smoke alarm in an unfinished basement?

    Yes. Every level of the home needs coverage, including basements, and the basement is a common origin point for fires because that's where the furnace and electrical panel typically live. The usual placement is on the ceiling at the bottom of the basement stairs.

    How often do smoke detectors need to be replaced?

    Every 10 years from the manufacture date printed on the unit, regardless of how well it seems to work. CO alarms are typically 7 to 10 years. Batteries in non-sealed units are changed annually; sealed 10-year-battery units are replaced whole.

    Are interconnected alarms worth it?

    In anything larger than a single-storey apartment, substantially. The scenario interconnection solves is a fire starting far from where people are sleeping, where a single local alarm may not be loud enough to wake anyone. Smart alarms add a phone notification, which is the only form of alerting that works when the house is empty.
