If you have an ecobee4 or ecobee Smart Thermostat, you’re already aware that Alexa is built-in and integrated with them. That means you can operate any Alexa device hands-free right from your thermostat, eliminating the need for any other Alexa-enabled device.
But, with these ecobee smart thermostats, what voice commands and voice control options are available? I’ll go over the Alexa commands that you can utilize with your ecobee devices.
There are a variety of commands you may use to manage your ecobee after Alexa is activated on your thermostat.
Temperatures may be adjusted and monitored. If you have more than one thermostat or various sensors, Alexa will let you operate each one separately.
How to Setup Ecobee with Alexa?
To use the full set of ecobee voice commands, you need two Alexa skills:

Another thing to keep in mind while utilizing the skills is that the “ecobee” skill sets just require you to say “Alexa, what is the temperature of the thermostat?”
You’ll need to say, “Alexa, ask ecobee what the thermostat temperature is?” using the “ecobee plus” talent.
You should be aware that when you change the temperature using an Alexa command it overrides any existing schedules and will continue keeping that temperature for the duration of your thermostat’s “Hold Period.”
To adjust the Hold Action Duration:
- Enter the Settings menu in the app, web portal, or thermostat (ecobee thermostat screen)
- Navigate to Preferences
- Select Hold Action Duration and adjust as desired
Both of these skills are free and, thankfully, set-up is painless.
To get Setup started:
- Navigate to each skill’s home page in the Alexa app
From the Alexa app, click on each skill’s link (above) to be brought to its page in the Alexa Skills Store
- Enable the skill
Enable the skill by clicking “Enable” and signing in with your ecobee account
- Device Discovery
Click “discover devices” on the next screen and wait 30-45 seconds for Alexa to discover your ecobee device.
Make sure that your Alexa devices and ecobee thermostat are powered on and on the same wi-fi network!
- Name your device and add it to a group (optional)
Once Alexa discovers your device, you will have the option to rename your device and add it to one of your groups within the Alexa app. (Note that this is optional and can always be done later.)
